Historic Downtown McMinnville

Nestled in the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range, McMinnville is the largest city in Yamhill County with a history tracing back to the 1840s, before Oregon’s statehood. Populated with period buildings and tree-lined streets, McMinnville’s downtown area contains “Oregon’s Favorite Main Street,” Third Street, which has previously been voted among the best main streets in America.

McMinnville is also the gateway to Oregon Wine Country. It’s home to over 700 wineries that highlight the pinot noir the region is known for, while the city itself has no shortage of local tasting rooms to discover. With an undeniable atmosphere and a variety of attractions from award-winning restaurants to historic sightseeing, McMinnville is sure to charm any traveler visiting Oregon.

Downtown McMinnville’s History

In 1844, Kentucky native John Gordon Baker and his family were the first to settle in the area that would later become McMinnville. Soon after were William T. Newby and his wife Sarah, whose sizable plot of land contained well-traveled trails leading to California, the Oregon coast, and Portland. In 1853, Newby began milling grain for local farmers along the path that would become Third Street. A blacksmith and a general store soon joined the mill, continuing to grow the area. Newby commissioned surveyor Sebastian Adams to lay out a town grid, and the town was platted in May 1856 and named after Newby’s hometown in Tennessee.

Between 1885 and 1912, most of the business structures along Third Street were built and today, those same historic buildings have been thoughtfully renovated and preserved over the years. Trees now line the city sidewalks, giving the city a cozy feeling, while a mix of long-term and new businesses keep the streets buzzing with locals and visitors alike.

McMinnville’s Third Street: The Place to Be

The Tributary building has remained a fixture of downtown McMinnville, serving as a farming supply shop, a hardware and general store, and apartments over the years. Now, our boutique inn has been meticulously restored to highlight the historic facade and the interior brickwork, while its convenient location makes it the perfect place to stay along Third Street.

As you make your way through the heart of the city, you’ll find local bookstores, quaint antique stores, farm-to-table restaurants, and of course, wineries. Make a day of it by checking out art galleries along the Art Walk, which features works ranging from landscapes to sculptures to glasswork, most within easy walking distance of each other. In true small-city fashion, events and community gatherings abound throughout the year, along with a weekly farmer’s market that features local produce, fresh flowers, and handmade products.

Explore the Willamette Valley

Situated in the picturesque Willamette Valley that spans from Portland to Eugene, McMinnville is in close proximity to Portland (40 miles), Salem (30 miles), and the Oregon Coast (50 miles), making it a convenient addition to any Oregon vacation itinerary. Guests to the valley can take full advantage of Oregon Wine Country and plan a trip that includes the area’s most popular wineries.

Thanks to the Willamette Valley’s mild climate, a variety of outdoor activities can be enjoyed year-round, including cycling and hiking, visiting wineries, or checking out the outdoor mural art in downtown McMinnville. For those looking to take a hike, Tice Woods is a low-key trail just six minutes from Tributary Hotel, while a 26-minute drive will take you to Champoeg State Park where you’ll find a network of scenic trails along the Willamette River.
